Freedom

My life is intense, and always has been. Four children. Work that has never let go: lawyer, CEO, consultant, a private office. The responsibility does not stop, and the pressure to decide is constant.

In that world, everything I produce follows rules. A legal brief, a report, fixed forms, exact objectives, no room for error.

Painting is where I put precision down. It is where I come back to myself, where I set down what I feel without fear of judgment, and where I simplify: two hundred places I have passed through, the people, the landscapes, all pared back to what remains once the noise is gone.

I have always lived in layers, balancing distinct professions, experimenting constantly, wanting to learn everything I can. My work could never be any different. I work in one language - flat fields, decided edges, and colour that is rarely the colour that was there - and in two registers: the places, and the irony in Latin.

For now, painting lives in the space between my two worlds. Day by day, it is claiming the entire horizon.

Sílvia Biscaia is a contemporary painter based in Faro, Portugal. She made her first paintings in 2003, for her law office, and returned to painting in 2026.

What Remains, her first exhibition, opens in Almancil on 23 October 2026.
