The divi divi tree of Aruba, bent permanently to the southwest by a wind that never stops. It grows sideways because it has no choice, and it has become the thing the island is recognised by.
Deep green against pink. No horizon, no beach, no sky. The tree alone on a flat field, closer to a sign than to a portrait.
Aruba is the only place where I have painted the same subject more than once. Some shapes take more than one attempt.
